Quick answer: Search your name at searchandclaimpa.gov, the Pennsylvania Treasury’s new unclaimed property site (launched in September 2026). If you find a match, start a claim and send proof of who you are. Many amounts of $500 or less are now mailed to owners automatically through Pennsylvania Money Match, with no claim needed.
Pennsylvania’s Treasury is working to return more than $5 billion in unclaimed property, according to Treasurer Stacy Garrity’s office. More than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed some of it, and the average claim is worth more than $1,000.
That’s real money for a five-minute search. Here’s how to check, what changed this year and how to get paid.

How to claim Pennsylvania unclaimed property, step by step
- Type searchandclaimpa.gov into your browser yourself. Don’t click links in texts or emails.
- Search your name. Try your current name, then any former names.
- Check the details. The new site shows the exact dollar amount for items under $500 and “over $500” for bigger ones.
- Start a claim for the items that are yours. The system now adds other matching items for the same owner automatically.
- Send the documents the claim asks for, such as ID and proof of an old address.
- Share what you find. If a friend or relative shows up in your search, the site lets you email them the listing.
Pennsylvanians who lived in other states can also search MissingMoney.com, the Treasury notes.
What changed in 2026: a new site and automatic checks
A new search site. In September 2026, Treasurer Garrity launched searchandclaimpa.gov to replace the old search. According to Treasury, it adds:
- Automatic matching: when you claim one item, it adds other qualifying items under your name
- Exact values for items under $500
- Email sharing for property you find for friends and family
- Stronger fraud checks that flag suspicious claims for review
Treasury says the automatic matching added another $5 million to people’s claims soon after launch.
Money Match checks. Pennsylvania Money Match was created by Act 81 of 2024, which passed both chambers unanimously. It lets Treasury return unclaimed property worth up to $500 that belongs to a single owner, automatically. Treasury says it returned more than $50 million this way in the program’s first year. In March 2026, more than 100,000 checks totaling nearly $23 million went out in the year’s first batch.
Property over $500, property with more than one owner, and other complex cases still need a claim with documents.

What kind of property is waiting
State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy. Common types include:
- Dormant bank accounts
- Uncashed checks, including paychecks and refunds
- Forgotten stocks and rebates
- Insurance policies
- Safe deposit box contents, like jewelry, coins and savings bonds
- Military decorations and memorabilia
Physical items are kept for about three years before they’re auctioned. The money from the auction is held for the owner forever. Military decorations are never auctioned. Treasury has returned hundreds of them to veterans and families, including Purple Hearts and Bronze Stars.
A quick example
This is a made-up example to show how a typical claim works. It is not a real person.
Say you lived in Allentown in 2019, then moved to Pittsburgh. Your old gym owed you a $60 refund after you canceled, but the check went to Allentown and was never cashed. Three years later, the gym reported it to Treasury.
When I help someone search, I tell them to scan the city and company first. “Allentown” next to a gym you once used is the clue. Because it’s under $500 and belongs to just you, it might even show up as a Money Match check in your mailbox. If not, a quick claim with your ID and something showing the old Allentown address should do it.
Then search your parents and grandparents. With an average claim over $1,000, older family accounts are often where the bigger amounts are.
Documents you may need
The claim tells you what to send. In general, have these ready:
- A photo ID, such as a Pennsylvania driver’s license
- Your Social Security number for identity checks
- Proof of the address on file, such as an old bill, lease or bank statement
- Proof of a name change, if the property is under a former name
- For a relative who died: a death certificate and papers showing you’re an heir or the estate representative

Common mistakes Pennsylvanians make
- Tossing a Treasury check. A Money Match check is real. Cash it.
- Searching only your current name. Try maiden names, married names and nicknames.
- Forgetting family members. Search parents and grandparents who died.
- Assuming you already checked. The new site and automatic matching may find items the old search didn’t show.
- Searching only Pennsylvania. If you lived in New Jersey, Ohio or anywhere else, check MissingMoney.com.
- Paying a finder. You can search and file on your own.
How to avoid unclaimed-property scams
Real money brings fake offers. Watch for:
- A text or email with a link saying you have money waiting. Type searchandclaimpa.gov yourself.
- Anyone who asks for a fee, a gift card or your bank login to “release” your money.
- A website that looks official but doesn’t end in .gov.
- Pressure to act fast. Cash held by Treasury doesn’t expire.
How long does a Pennsylvania claim take?
Treasury doesn’t publish one fixed timeline. Simple claims for one owner with clear proof usually move faster than estate claims or items with several owners. The best way to avoid delays is to send every document the claim asks for the first time, and to keep your claim number handy if you need to follow up.
Claiming for a business or nonprofit
Unclaimed property can belong to businesses, nonprofits and local governments too. Search the organization’s legal name and any old names. Expect to show that you’re allowed to act for it, such as an officer title or board letter.
How to keep your money from going unclaimed
- Update your address with banks, employers, insurers and utilities when you move.
- Cash checks right away, even small refunds.
- Log in once a year to accounts you rarely use. Pennsylvania’s clock is only three years.
- Keep a list of your accounts and policies, and tell someone you trust where it is.
