ALL ABOUT CARACAL: ONE OF INDIA'S RAREST WILD CAT

Caracal is one of the rarest wild cats in India known for their distinct appearance and elusive nature.

Last month, a caracal was spotted through camera traps in Rajasthan's Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve for the first time.

They are medium sized wild cats with golden brown fur, long legs, and prominent ear tufts.

Built for speed and agility, their strong, lean body helps them to leap high and catch prey mid-air.

Historically, caracals are said to be trained by royalty in India and Persia to hunt birds. In ancient Egypt, they were often featured in art.

Caracals, also known as desert lynx, are found in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in India

They inhabit dry grasslands, scrub forests and semi-arid regions that provide them both cover and prey.

Caracals are carnivores who prey on birds, rodents, small mammals and antelopes.

Despite under Wildlife Protection Act, their sightings remain rare with fewer than 100 population remaining.
