TAX DEADLINE · OCT. 15

FILED AN EXTENSION?

Your 2025 return is due Thursday. Here’s what to do now.

01

FILE, EVEN IF YOU CAN’T PAY

The extension gave you more time to file, not to pay. Filing on time avoids the biggest penalty.

02

GATHER YOUR FORMS TONIGHT

W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, last year’s return, and any extension payment you made in April.

03

CHECK YOUR IRS ONLINE ACCOUNT

It shows payments the IRS already has from you, so you don’t overpay.

04

FREE FILE IS STILL OPEN

If your income is under the IRS limit, Free File partners let you e-file for free through Oct. 15.

05

E-FILE, DON’T MAIL

You get a confirmation, and refunds with direct deposit usually arrive in about three weeks.

06

PAY WHAT YOU CAN

IRS Direct Pay is free from your bank account. Every dollar paid now cuts interest.

09

IGNORE "IRS" TEXTS

The IRS doesn’t start contact by text or ask for gift cards or crypto. Use IRS.gov only.
